Brahma Temple, Ajmer

Brahma temple, AjmerThe only Brahma Temple of India is situated 11 kilometres off Ajmer in Pushkar. The temple is believed to have been erected in the 14th century. It is a sacred place for Hindus. Lord Brahma is one amongst the three prime gods of the Hindu pantheon.

The Hindu mythology says that the demon Vajra Nabh had been slain by Lord Brahma with the help of a lotus flower. On the fall of the petals of these flowers was formed the Pushkar Lake. Therefore, the temple was built on the banks of this lake. Yet another religious tale says that Brahma had come here to perform a yagna (sacrifice) leaving Goddess Saraswati back in the heavens. But the yagna could not have been performed without a wife. So Lord Brahma married Gayatri, a local girl. When Goddess Sarawati came to know of this she cursed her husband. It is for this reason that Lord Brahma is not worshipped as a prominent deity anywhere in India except Pushkar, Rajasthan.

The inner premises of the temple enthral the visitors. Just a glimpse of the temple leaves them speechless. The glistening marble steps, intricately carved swans and silver marble archways are simply stunning. Silver coins with donors’ names engraved on them, embellish the floor. The spirit of divine spreads to every nook and corner of the temple. The appeal of the holy pilgrimage is enhanced by the magnificently sculpted peacocks. Kartik Purnima (full moon) is the major occasion of celebration at the Brahma Temple in Ajmer.
