Stepwells / Bawadi, Bundi

Stepwells / Bawadi, BundiFamously known as the city of step-wells, the step-wells of Bundi have come to symbolize architectural expertise of Bundi land. They also are standing example of water management expertise that the city developed to cope with crises.

History of the step-wells

The step-wells of Bundi have a history of their own. In ancient times, reservoirs, lakes and tanks were the chief sources of drinking water. It was a common sight to see women travelling distances with their pitchers and pots to collect water. These step-wells doubled up as socializing zones as women would meet other women, spend time interacting. These step-wells therefore became integral to everyday life in Bundi. The step-wells were major source of drinking water till the piped supply system was introduced.

The step-wells bear designs of leaves, birds and flowers on the walls. A keen tourist would note that every step well in Bundi has carvings of Ganesh on one side and Saraswati on the other. These were also constructed as the rulers wanted Bundi to reflect its beauty in the waters. The Nagar Sagar Kund refers to twin step-wells that are visible from theTaragarh fort. A shrine springs from the centre of the Nagar Sagar Lake dedicated to Lord Varun, the God of Water. In the heart of Bundi is Rani-ji-ki-baori, the queen’s step-well a 200 feet-deep construction. Credit for developing step-wells in the city goes to the queen of Raja Anirudh Singh, who was responsible for nearly 20 step-wells. This artificial lake mirrors the beauty of the city.
