 The Rajputs of Rajasthan were famous for building great architectural establishments which play an important part in making the heritage of the state rich. Hawa Mahal is one such establishment located in Jaipur. It is also known as the 'Palace Of Winds'. It is a marvelous establishment built with a purpose; to allow the royal ladies to enjoy everyday activities in the bustling bazaars of the city. The ladies would conceal themselves behind the windows and peep through them to see the processions taking place in the streets below.
Hawa Mahal was built in the year 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. He was a staunch believer of Lord Krishna and hence dedicated this Mahal to the divine. If you notice carefully you will find its exterior structure look like a mukut (crown). This crown was built in the honor of Lord Krishna and looks like a adorning his head.
Hawa Mahal is an assortment of small casements built in the form of a Pyramid. All the casements are pierced with several windows and the roofs are arched to perfection. The interiors of the Mahal are not lavishly decorated, instead they are simple and plain which clearly explains that this Mahal was never constructed for residential purpose.
During that era Rajput royal ladies were not supposed to come out in open without pardah (veil). It was against their tradition which was followed very strictly. So the King built Hawa Mahal especially for the royal ladies so that they could also enjoy the processions and activities taking place in the city. There are around 953 small windows in the Mahal; some have beautiful lattice work while others are wooden. It was designed by an accomplished architect of that time known as Lal Chand Usta.
