Nahargarh Fort, Jaipur

Nahargarh Fort, JaipurEach corner of the Nahargarh Fort whispers the stories of heroism and chivalry. It is also known as the 'Tiger Fort' and is located on Aravali Hills. It was built in the year 1734 by Sawai Raja Jai Singh for defending the city of Amber from invaders. Later some new additions were made to add more beauty to the fort. It has several imposing structures inside its complex but Madhavendra Bhawan deserves a special mention. It was built by Sawai Ram Singh II. It boasts of beautifully decorated 12 identical double storey suites for queens and a regal suite for the king. These rooms are interconnected with the corridors which are no less impressive. The balconies offer an enchanting view of Man Sagar Lake.

The fort also houses several cannons which were placed there to protect the city from invaders. But fortunately the city was never attacked by the Mughals or the other Rajput rulers.

The fort is named after a Rajput prince. According to the local people the spirit of a prince haunted the area where the fort now stands, for a long time. When the construction of the fort began, the spirit would not let it proceed smoothly. At last a Tantrik (a person who performs tantras) could manage to free the place from the wickedness of the spirit. However, the spirit left on one condition and that was to name the fort after him. You can visit the Nahargarh Fort between 10 AM to 4:30 PM.
