Jaisalmer

Bada Bagh Chhatries (cenotaphs), JaisalmerJaisalmer is one of the most amazing desert cities anywhere in the world. It is known as Golden City for its golden sands. The mystery of the desert, rich history, the palace and several ornate Jain temples, stunning mansions as well as camel safaris make Jaisalmer a very special place indeed.

Jaisalmer was founded in 1156 by Bhati Rajput ruler Jaisal. His clan claims to be Suryavanshi, i.e. the descendants of the Sun God. Raval Jaisal also built the sandstone fort, on the Trikuta hill. This is a unique fort, in that its fortified walls enclose the city. It is a living fort, with nearly a quarter of city's population still living inside the fort. It is called Sonar Killa. Inside the fort, Raj Mahal (Royal palace), Jain temples and the Laxminath temple are the main attractions.

Jaisalmer has several havelis (mansions) that are a must visit on any itinerary.  These are Patwon ki Haveli, Salim Singh ki Haveli and Nathmalji ki Haveli. Jaisalmer has three museums, namely, Desert Culture Centre & Museum, Jaisalmer Folklore Museum, and the Government museum. Sam Sand Dunes and the Gadsisar Lake round off the sightseeing here. The Desert Festival is held here each year in the month of January. Cultural performances of the Marwar regions songs and dances are the highlight of this festival.

Jaisalmer has an international border and is also bound by Bikaner, Jodhpur and Barmer. Jaisalmer has a very dry climate with very hot summer; a cold winter and sparse rains. The best time to visit is considered to be from October to March.

Jodhpur is the nearest airport, 300 km away while Jaisalmer has its own rail link. Good quality roads connect it with the rest of the city. Numerous heritage hotels like Hotel Fort Rajwada, Hotel Rawal Kot and Hotel Narayan Niwas Palace are available here apart from budget and mid-range hotels.
