Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur

Mehrangarh Fort, JodhpurBeing a desert landscape as barren as the moon, Jodhpur in Rajasthan pulls hordes of tourists. Thanks to this landscape the Mehrangarh Fort looks more magical than ever. Do not miss the opportunity of visiting the larger than life Mehrangarh Fort while you are in Jodhpur.

Nothing can beat the pleasure of moving around the spacious courtyards, alleyways and terraces in one of the largest forts across the globe. It offers a wonderful view of the city. The fort that seems to have grown gloriously from the low hill it stands on, puts in shade all the other attractions of Jodhpur.

The Mehrangarh Fort houses a number of smaller forts and palatial structures. While you are inside the Mehrangarh Fort do climb the summit (Lohapol). There you will see the hand prints of the widows of Raja Man Singh who preferred to commit 'Sati' rather than suffer in the hands of the enemy.

The next attraction that is housed inside the fort is the Takhat Vilas Palace. You will be amazed to see murals that adorn the 200 year old palace from floor to ceiling. These murals were painted in different themes depicting wars, weddings, games, brave warriors and beautiful women. The huge Belgian Christmas Ball that hangs in the palace will remind you of the royalty that existed in the yesteryears.

Yet another attraction within the Mehrangarh Fort is the Moti Mahal (pearl palace). The stained glass windows decorate the structure. The effect of light and shade that these windows cast is charismatic crossword of colours.

The Mehrangarh Fort Museum was managed by Maharaja Gaj Singh II in the earlier days. The gallery is comparable to a fantasy world and displays folk instruments, palanquins, robes with jewels studded in them and certain other relics.
