Hotel Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur

Hotel Umaid Bhawan Palace, JodhpurUmaid Bhawan Palace is among the best palaces in India and the world. Perched above the city on a hill, it sits like a crown on the forehead of the desert city of Jodhpur. Umaid Bhawan Palace is also one of the largest residences in the world with 347 opulent rooms.

Umaid Bhawan was designed by Henry Lanchester, the Edwardian architect.  Built on a grand scale, the golden-yellow sandstone monument was made in art deco style. It took fifteen years to complete Umaid Bhawan Palace. Enjoy a taste of royal living when you take a vacation at this palace as was once enjoyed by kings and queens. The palace was earlier the main residence of Jodhpur’s Royal family. It is named after Maharaja Umaid Singh Ji.  His grandson, the present Maharaja of Jodhpur, Maharaja Gaj Singh Ji now owns this palace.

These days, Umaid Bhawan Palace is divided into three sections; one is used as a heritage hotel, another as a museum and the third section is still occupied by the erstwhile royal family. It was earlier called Chittar Palace since it is built on Chittar Hill in Jodhpur. 5000 men worked for sixteen years to complete the building. Umaid Bhavan was designed to ensure a steady temperature at approximately 23 C.

The private museum attached to the Palace has a display of arms, furniture, antique clocks and China vases that are priceless and once were the private collection of the royal family.

Out of its 347 rooms, the hotel has 39 suites and 25 rooms. The suites are Maharaja Suite, Maharani Suite, several royal and regal suites. The hotel is equipped with modern conveniences of the highest quality, worthy of a hotel of this level.

Guests at the hotel can use the museum as well as the palace library. There is a shopping arcade, resident astrologer and palmist, an indoor heritage pool and an outdoor pool, besides a fitness centre, golf, horse riding and Polo on request.

There is an a la carte restaurant called Risala. The other dining facilities include The Pillars (a coffee shop) and the Trophy Bar. The Taj Spa is available for outstanding Taj treatments to unwind and rejuvenate.
