Fairs and Festivals of Rajasthan

Baneshwar Fair Banswara, RajasthanFairs and Festivals of Rajasthan are like a stage where thousands of actors participate and play their own colorful role making the play worth a visit. They are an integral part of the lives of the people of the state. Providing a wonderful opportunity to see Rajasthan at its best, the fairs and festivals are packed with religious as well as cultural activities. All the festivities are unique in their concept. Most of the celebrations originated from the womb of the traditions but there are some which occupied a prized place on the calendar of Rajasthan purely for to attract tourists such as the Elephant Festival. Whatever may be the reason for celebration, the common thing in all the fairs and festivals is that they are celebrated with great passion and enthusiasm.

Some of the well known fairs and festivals of Rajasthan are:

Pushkar Fair: It is the largest camel fair of the world. It is held in the month of November in the holy town Pushkar. Camel races, cattle trade, dance and music are the main attractions of the fair.


Elephant Festival: Celebrated in the month of Feb-March, the festival is marked with elephant races, turban tying competitions, elephant polo, tug of war between elephants and men and female elephant beauty contest. It is held on Holi eve providing an opportunity to the visitors to play Holi on elephants. Elephants are 'dressed to kill' by their owners before bringing them to the festival.


Desert Festival: Held in the golden city of Jaisalmer in the month of Jan- Feb, it is an amazing celebration marked by camel safari and cultural activities on the golden hued sand of the desert.


Gangaur Festival: Welcoming the advent of Spring, the festival is dedicated to the worship of Isar and Gauri. Womenfolk are the main participants of this festival. It is believed that whoever performs the rituals of the festival are blessed with marital bliss.


Mewar Festival: This festival is dedicated to the arrival of spring. Dance and music performances and fireworks make it a big hit with elders and children.


Urs Ajmer Sharif: This festival is celebrated in the memory of highly respected Sufi saint Khawaja Moinuddin Chisti. It is believed that if you participate in this festival and offer a prayer fortified with faith, it never goes unanswered. It is held in Ajmer city.
