History of Rajasthan

HistoricalSonar Quila, JaisalmerRajasthan is an ancient and historical land. Its heroic past and tales of its brave warriors are well known. The history of Rajasthan can be seen in its architecture and is narrated in the ballads and paintings of Rajasthan.

Tribals are the ancient dwellers of this land. Remains of Harappa and Mohenjodaro dating back to 2700 B.C have been found in Rajasthan. The Bairat inscription reveals that Emperor Ashoka had spread his empire to Rajasthan. The Saka dynasty ruled from second to fourth century, and the Guptas from fourth to sixth centuries.

Rajasthan has an international border and has been attacked by various invaders throughout history. Aryans came and settled here. Rajputs are believed to be the descendants of Aryans. The Rajputs rose to prominence in the 9th and 10th centuries, and were a major force to reckon with in medieval India. Prithviraj Chauhan was one of the most well known of Rajput braves. He fought successfully against Muhammad Ghori in the battle of Tarain in 1191. The great Rana Pratap of Mewar, was another brave Rajput warrior who withstood the might of the Mughals. He died in 1597.

The Mughals occupied large parts of Rajasthan in medieval times. The regions that they could not occupy directly, they married into the families or entered into strategic alliances. The British also occupied Rajasthan when the controlled India.

Some time after India became independent from British rule, the princely states were abolished and the entire region was unified into the state of Rajasthan.
